Ahead of the elections of regional councillors slated for November 30, 2025, members of the electoral board of Elections Cameroon met in their first session as of right on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Members of the electoral board of Elections Cameroon, the Director General and deputy Director General of Elections all met together on Monday, September 8, 2025 in Yaounde, in a bid to draft a well-defined budget, the agenda of activities to be carried on the field, validate the status of the electoral colleges and the electoral lists as well as to fine tune strategies that will help organize harmonious and peaceful elections in upcoming November.

The chairperson of the electoral board of ELECAM, Dr. Enow Abrams Egbe, who presided over this session, said the electoral colleges were convened by the President of the Republic to elect regional councillors on the 30th of November 2025, in accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Code.

This first statutory session, as of right held at the head office of ELECAM in Yaounde, was therefore aimed at setting the pace for preparations and to organize with serenity the election of regional councillors.

In his keynote address to members of the electoral board and top management of the directorate general, Dr. Enow Abrams Egbe, like usual, praised their relentless efforts and key role in facilitating the organization of a hitch-free, fair, and transparent presidential election on October 12, 2025.

“We have just returned from the field where we evaluated the level of preparedness for the forthcoming presidential election in the various constituencies and also engaged with our operational staff to ensure their readiness towards the election.” He stated

Dr. Enow Abrams Egbe also indicated there are several stakes and challenges, as they are currently preparing for the October 12 presidential polls while putting in place new mechanisms for the holding of regional councils’ elections.

He said: “As you are aware, this election is taking place at a pivotal moment in our electoral history, as it is the first time we have had to conduct an election within another election. This cannot be overstated, as we must navigate through the presidential and regional election calendars simultaneously. This is a new challenge, but I believe that if we continue to work together as we always have, we can overcome it… As stipulated in Section 19(1) of the Electoral Code, the Electoral Board must meet as often as necessary during an election period. Subsection (2) specifies that such meetings must be held at least once every fortnight after the electorate has been convened. It is within this legal and institutional framework that we are gathered here today. The regional elections are more than just another electoral milestone; they are a cornerstone of Cameroon’s decentralisation process and a vital mechanism for transferring power closer to the people. By electing regional councillors, the Republic is breathing new life into local governance and empowering communities to shape policies and development agendas that reflect their realities and aspirations. This election is therefore both a constitutional duty and a democratic promise, strengthening national unity while celebrating local diversity.”

During this session, as indicated by the Chairperson of the electoral board, Dr. Essousse Erik, the Director General of ELECAM, made an in-depth presentation of activities that will lead to the organization of these regional polls, which are: the needs in terms of materials, the financial budget, the reception of candidacies and the strict respect of datelines fixed by the law.

The chairperson of the electoral board said the election of regional councillors comes in, to consolidate the decentralization process, the empowerment of institutions, and to reinforce local democracy.
