Dr Erik Essousse, Director General of Elections at ELECAM announced on Thursday, 4th of January 2024 while officially launching voters’ registration process for this year.
It is through a well-organized caravan that toured the town of Yaounde, that the new registration process was launched by the Director General of Elections Cameroon, Dr Erik Essousse.
The patron of ELECAM and his team started with a brief encounter at the governor’s office and later on, went to the Mokolo market where a registration point was set up.
At the central town, just beside the post office, another registration point was set up for the operation. Here, Dr. Essousse exchanged with the staff of ELECAM on duty and media practitioners.
In the interview granted to the media, the Director General expressed satisfaction and said the process that runs till August 31 targets over 7 million new persons on voters’ lists.
He assured the press of the smooth functioning of all machines and the logistics of ELECAM for a hitch-free operation ahead of upcoming elections in 2025.
Dr Erik Essousse also seized the occasion to once more encourage women, youths people living with disabilities, and all minorities to register on electoral lists.
The Director General of ELECAM was accompanied on the field by the Vice-President of the Electoral Board, Mrs. Appoline Marie Amugu Ekobena, and the Regional Delegate of ELECAM in the Center, Michele Arlette Essi.
Djoben’s Adjaba is one of the newly registered voters. He came to accomplish his duty as a citizen.
“As a citizen, I believe that registration on voters’ lists is a duty and I have to be ready for upcoming elections and to choose my candidate. I am happy to have registered and appreciate the work of Elecam” He said.
Apart from the various registration points set up so far in crowded sites, the nationwide operation takes place in all the regional antennas of ELECAM, and voters are expected.
The newly launched registration process is by provisions of the Electoral Code, which states in section 74 that electoral registers shall be permanent and shall be revised every year. Meaning the operations begin on January 1 and end on August 31 of every year.
According to statistics from ELECAM, to date, the total number of voters on the national electoral register stands at 7.523.184 electors.
At the end of the year 2023, it was disclosed that 368.119 persons were enrolled on voters’ lists.
